In 2021, mandana founder and mother of three Christine Marhofer was inspired to create something sustainable and lasting. High-quality jewellery is made for eternity and diamonds are the most durable material in the world – the perfect symbiosis. However, Christine Marhofer could not reconcile including mined diamonds in her jewellery collections with her values. Especially not with her high level of awareness of sustainability. This is because mined diamonds are associated with devastating environmental and ethical issues. Yet dispensing with diamonds altogether was not an option either.
In an effort to make a difference by creating sustainable jewellery for all genders, tastes and generations, Christine Marhofer came upon lab-grown diamonds during her research. Since then, she and the mandana team have pursued a shared mission: to produce ethical and sustainable diamond jewellery using climate-neutral and transparent production processes and to make it accessible – using lab-grown diamonds produced especially in Germany. All to help look after our planet.
A new era of diamonds – never mined, but lab-grown.
LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS
Grown in Germany
Lab-grown diamonds (LGD) are not imitations, but real diamonds. They are visually, chemically and physically identical to mined diamonds, only they are created in the laboratory. Growing diamonds from small pieces of diamond known as ‘seeds’ in the lab as part of elaborate processes is a complicated undertaking. This requires the right recipe, as well as hi-tech equipment. Most of the manufacturers are based in locations far from Europe.
At mandana, it soon became clear to us: if we wish to balance luxury and sustainability, we can’t ship our lab-grown diamonds halfway around the world to Germany and accept huge amounts of CO2 emissions on the way. That is why we have founded a second company in addition to mandana. Nevermined is our own diamond production company in Essen, Germany. Here, through intensive research, we have created a recipe to grow diamonds of the highest quality.
All our diamonds with 0.5 ct and above are certified by one of the two best-known laboratories, the International Gemological Institute (IGI) or the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and confirmed in their authenticity and quality. We are proven to meet the same 4C standards as mined diamonds. We are revolutionising everything necessary to ultimately produce diamond jewellery in a fair and sustainable way.
HOLISTICALLY SUSTAINABLE
True beauty comes from within
In addition to the environmental and ethical benefits of LGD compared to mined diamonds, we consider sustainability along the entire supply chain. That’s why our facilities are fully powered by natural electricity from renewable sources. We are also currently working to produce some of it ourselves.
Our jewellery cases are made from a highly innovative imitation leather made from olive residue. For the hot foil embossing on our cases, we have opted for an uncommon biodegradable alternative. Whenever we use soft fabric ribbons, their yarn is made from recycled PET bottles. These are just a few examples of how we practise sustainability. As we care a great deal about our social responsibility, we support the Earth Child Project led by the South African charity EarthChild e.V. This helps children from disadvantaged schools learn to build a deeper, mindful connection to themselves and to nature. In specially built classrooms, they can take part in yoga classes, mindfulness exercises and meditations, or learn how to grow vegetables using techniques such as ‘worm farms’.

In recent years, the understanding of luxury has changed. As our sense of responsibility for preserving our planet increases, our willingness to invest in luxury goods simply due to scarcity is waning. At mandana, we firmly believe that a piece of jewellery does not gain value through scarcity – but through its contribution to a sustainable future.
We consider status symbols to be valuable when they have been made with sustainability in mind. If they rely on renewable raw materials, alternative materials and durable substance. If they open their supply chains transparently, pay employees fairly and represent minorities. Responsible brands should strive constantly to renew and rethink and give something back to the world they draw from. Sustainability is the new luxury. Standing up for social justice is a luxury. Ideals are luxuries. Doing your part is a luxury. All this is worth a precious pieces of jewellery to us.

Diamond jewellery has a material and ideal value. We only use the highest quality materials so that our customers can form a bond with their jewellery that will last a lifetime. We use recycled 750 gold (18 carat) to lovingly craft unique pieces by hand – here in Europe, in Germany and Spain.
The name mandana carries a special meaning in different cultures and languages, which lends our brand a cosmopolitan identity. Possible translations mean something like ‘eternal’ and ‘enduring’ or ‘piece of jewellery’ and ‘adornment’ - which together creates a symbolism that perfectly matches our pursuit of beauty and quality in enduring materials, precious metals and diamonds. This essence is reflected in every step of our work, from the selection of the rough diamond to the artful design in recycled gold to the finished collection of our jewellery.
