HELP, MY NECKLACE IS TANGLED!
We’ve all been there. You put your necklace in a case or a pocket with other jewellery, for instance, when you go to work out, and as if by magic, everything has tied together when you take it back out again. How can you undo this mess? We’ve got a few tips for untangling tangled necklaces:
- Tip 1: First of all: stay calm, and don’t pull tightly on the chain. That can break it. Take plenty of time to untangle your jewellery and approach the task with patience.
- Tip 2: Find a flat surface where you can place your jewellery. You may be inclined to quickly untangle your necklaces in your hands, but this can make the whole business unnecessarily complicated. Sit down at your kitchen table or desk in good lighting and place the necklace on it. Now carefully pop a needle into the knot and move it around until the knot loosens slightly. You can now use a second needle to undo the knot.
- Tip 3: For particularly delicate necklaces, chances are, you won’t be able to undo the knot properly with your fingers. In this case, needles or sharp objects can help, such as sewing needles or safety pins, as you can grasp them properly. Carefully insert one needle into the knot and jiggle it a little to and fro to loosen the knot. Then take a second needle, stick it in the loosened knot and carefully use the two needles to undo the ends of the tangled chain(s).
- Tip 4: If a few necklaces tangled tightly together won’t loosen, a drop of cooking oil or baby oil can help. Put some oil on the knot and rub it in carefully. You can also use the needles or sharp objects from tip 3 to help undo the knot. Once you’ve dealt with the tangle, remember to clean your necklaces, so the oil doesn’t leave any deposits on the jewellery. Washing them in lukewarm soapy water should suffice.
We’ve got a few tips on storing your necklaces so they don’t get tied up again in future.
FOUR SAFE PLACES TO KEEP YOUR NECKLACES
JEWELLERY CASE
The ideal place to store your necklaces and other jewellery is a proper jewellery box. You can use it to keep your jewellery neat and tidy without worrying about anything getting damaged. They are well padded and often divided into several compartments. That makes it easier to keep track of your collection and find the right necklace for your outfit quicker. Make sure you don’t place too many pieces in one compartment – otherwise, they can become scratched or tangled.
JEWELLERY STANDS
Jewellery stands are another practical and decorative way to keep your necklaces neat and tidy. You can arrange your chains however you like and don’t need to worry about scratches or tangles. Placing your jewellery on a nice stand looks very elegant, too. Jewellery stands are available in all kinds of designs and materials to suit your decor perfectly.
WALL HANGING
Another way to store your necklaces is by hanging them on the wall. There are many practical ideas and solutions to ensure your chains are always to hand and even decorate your surroundings. Whether you hang them on striking, stylish hooks or put up small shelves where you place other accessories or pretty perfume bottles, walls are certainly an eye-catching place to keep your necklaces.
FOR ON THE GO: BAGS OR JEWELLERY BOXES
If you’re on the go and want to take off your necklaces (and other jewellery), for example, if you’re going for a swim or workout, you should carry a little bag or jewellery box with you. If you’d like to store other pieces of jewellery briefly, too, you should bring a few small containers with you, so they don’t get scratched. If you simply place your necklace in your handbag, you run the risk of it breaking if a diamond comes loose from its setting, or getting tangled up with other items in your handbag (headphones are a classic). Stay on the safe side and store them separately during your activities.
One last tip: if you decide to hang your gold necklaces on a jewellery stand or wall, make sure they aren’t in direct sunlight. UV light can tarnish the gold.
